Baked beans with aromatic oil

I came across this recipe a couple of years ago from the famous chef Jamie Oliver. Since then, I’ve been making these flavorful beans often — my whole family fell in love with them right away! I hope you’ll enjoy these baked beans with aromatic oil just as much.

Baked beans with aromatic oil

Ingredients:

  • 1 (15 oz) can red beans, drained
  • 1 (15 oz) can white beans, drained
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes (in juice)
  • 5 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4–5 Tbsp vegetable oil (I use canola oil)
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary (or 1 Tbsp dried)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: a few drops of Tabasco sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes
  • Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
  • Toasted bread, for serving

Instructions:

1. Make the aromatic oil.
Pour the vegetable oil into a skillet. Add the thinly sliced garlic and rosemary. Let it gently simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes, until the oil is infused with the wonderful aroma of garlic and herbs.

2. Add the onion and spices.
Add the finely chopped onion and smoked paprika to the pan. Sauté for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes soft and golden.

3. Deglaze with vinegar.
Pour in the wine vinegar and let it cook for a few minutes until it evaporates. This step adds a nice tangy depth to the flavor.

4. Add beans and tomatoes.
Stir in the drained red and white beans, then add the diced tomatoes with their juice. Cook for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
If you like a little heat, add a few drops of Tabasco or a pinch of red pepper flakes. Skip this step if you prefer a milder taste.

5. Bake to perfection.
Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
Transfer the beans to an ovenproof dish, cover tightly with foil, and bake for 45 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake uncovered for another 15 minutes, until the sauce thickens beautifully.

To serve:

Serve the baked beans warm on freshly toasted bread, topped with a generous sprinkle of grated Parmesan (or any aged cheese you like).

💡 Helpful Tip:

Make extra aromatic oil — it’s so versatile! Use it as a salad dressing with fresh vegetables and herbs, drizzle a few drops over pasta or pizza, or brush it onto bread before toasting for an instant flavor boost.
Just be sure to store it in a sterilized glass jar or bottle.
